IELTS Writing Task 2: a simple essay structure

Writing Task 2 asks for an essay of at least 250 words, and it counts twice as much as Task 1 in the Writing band. That is why most candidates spend the most time here. Below is a clear structure that suits almost any question.

Break the question down first

Identify the topic and what you are asked to do: give an opinion, discuss both views, or explain causes and solutions. Five minutes of planning organises your ideas and lowers the risk of missing part of the question, which is a common way to lose marks in Task Response.

A four-part structure

In the introduction, restate the question in your own words and state your position. In each of two body paragraphs give one main idea, explain it and add an example. Close with a short conclusion that repeats your position without adding new ideas.

Time and length

Of the 60 minutes for Writing, about 40 are recommended for Task 2. A response under 250 words can lose marks, so aim for roughly 260 to 280 words. Keep the last three or four minutes to read your answer and correct mistakes.

Learn your own error pattern

After each essay, list the mistakes from the feedback: an unfinished argument, a repeated word, an article or verb error. When the same mistake returns across essays, that is your next focus. The AI Coach in IELTS Prep BD finds that pattern and helps shape your practice around it.

Know the Writing Criteria

Name the four Writing criteria and identify whether a weakness is in task response, organisation, vocabulary or grammar.

Four criteria, four jobs

Task 2 uses Task Response; Task 1 uses Task Achievement. Both also assess Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy.

Task Response / Achievement → Did I complete the task?

Coherence and Cohesion → Is the response organised and connected?

Lexical Resource → Is the vocabulary precise and appropriate?

Grammatical Range and Accuracy → Are structures varied and controlled?

Think of four separate diagnostic boxes.

Organisation and connection

Coherence and Cohesion is about clear progression, sensible paragraphing and connections between ideas. A relevant point can still be hard to follow if it is placed badly.

Public buses reduce traffic. Another issue is university fees. They can also lower air pollution.

Public buses can reduce traffic. With fewer private cars on the road, cities may also produce less air pollution.

The better version keeps one connected idea together.

Try it yourself

An Academic Task 1 response describes several details but misses the main overall features. Which criterion is most directly affected?

  1. Task Achievement
  2. Coherence and Cohesion
  3. Lexical Resource
  4. Grammatical Range and Accuracy

A. Task Achievement

Task Achievement checks how well Task 1 fulfils the task; in Academic Task 1, that includes selecting and presenting the key features.

Common questions

Must a Task 2 essay be exactly 250 words?

You are asked to write at least 250 words. Fewer can lose marks; far more costs time and adds risk of errors, so stay balanced.

Can AI feedback replace an examiner?

No. AI feedback supports practice; a band is decided only in the official test.
