Academic: look, select, compare
Read the title, units and time period first. Then select the main trend or the biggest and smallest figures; you do not need every number. Write a one-sentence overview, then compare the details in two paragraphs. Do not add opinions or guesses.
General Training: choose the right tone
Choose the tone from your relationship to the reader: informal for a friend, semi-formal for someone you know, formal for a stranger. Cover every bullet in the prompt; missing one lowers Task Achievement. Match the opening and closing to the tone.
Time and length
A response under 150 words can lose marks, so aim for about 160 to 175. In 20 minutes, spend three or four minutes planning, thirteen or fourteen writing and two or three checking.
Practise one type at a time
Take one type per week: a line graph, bar chart, table, process or map, or a letter. After each piece pick one mistake from the feedback and fix it in the next. A mistake that keeps returning is your real weakness.

Common questions
Is Task 1 the same in Academic and General Training?
No. Academic describes information and General Training asks for a letter. Prepare for the type you will sit.
Does Task 1 carry the same weight as Task 2?
No. Task 2 counts twice as much as Task 1 in Writing, but Task 1 still needs careful work.
